I fell into that trap again, I went around on a very sunny day firing off shots on ISO 400. However, I was quite pleased with the results, although they were noticeably grainier than I’m used to.
I toned this picture of my son and his ice cream to give it a seventies holiday snapshot feel and the slight grain seems to add to it. Oh, and I left his wispy hair in because it makes me smile.
Now I really need a 580EX to get rid of those harsh shadows in sunlight like this.
your son looks great! what is with the waistcoat ? are going fishing with him ?
Lovely shot, nice details!
lol – what a cutie! love that ice cream all over his face – eaten how it should be
I’m not sure I get the name – I can’t see any grain on the photo at all! Still, whats in a name? It’s a nice portrait, not sure about the 70′s feel to it – to give it a real 70′s snapshot feel, I think you’d need to partially blur it, cross process, and add a bit more grain….
Marius: It’s a coat, not a waistcoat but sadly I don’t fish.
Jonathan Fleck: I left the ISO on 400, he’s eating ice cream just a naff play on words. The image does look grainier when you see it larger. I suppose it’s a little Lomo, rather than seventies.
Sorry Mark, but to lend it a 70′s feel you have to give it a browny-orange cast as we all know that the whole world looked that colour back then
I like that you’ve kept the wisps in too…keeps that personal element to it, which I think a photograph of you child should have. As for the flash/harsh shadows….weeeelll…yeah, but hey, once again, this is a personal shot. It’s about your little lad enjoying an ice cream on a sunny day. Should we really care too much about the technical qualities? Not for me (even though I criticise my own shots like this in a similar way
…). Most parents would kill for images like this.
Well…either that or pay stupid money to take them to a studio where they can be photographed sitting in a basket, holding a flower…
Ah, that we should all eat our ice cream with carefree bliss like he is. Wonderful image.
I like the processing on this. I wonder how much the shadows on a shot like this would be eliminated by a little fill flash, unless it was off camera. I reckon a $10 reflector would be a lot better
This is a nice portrait with good use of DOF.
Very nice portrait, indeed. Very natural.Good work!
Wow, great shot. I love the feel of it. Heh, I’ve fallen into that same ISO trap on tooooo many occasions. (Shot about 200 photos in bright sunny NUC at ISO 800 – ouch!) Though I think this one turned out fabulously; made me smile as well. Wondering a bit about the hallow near his right eye. Great portrait!
